Engineers Australia Skills Assessment Explained: CDR, Documents, Costs and Common Mistakes
An Engineers Australia migration skills assessment is not simply a document check. It is a formal decision about whether your qualification and evidence meet the standards for a nominated engineering category and occupation. This guide explains the pathways, CDR, documents, English requirements, 2026–27 fees, processing stages and avoidable mistakes.

Engineers seeking skilled migration to Australia frequently encounter three terms at the same time: skills assessment, Competency Demonstration Report and visa application. They are connected, but they are not the same process. Engineers Australia is the authorised assessing authority for most engineering occupations. It assesses qualifications, skills and experience and issues a migration skills assessment outcome. The Department of Home Affairs manages visas, points, invitations and immigration decisions.
This distinction prevents several costly misunderstandings. A positive Engineers Australia outcome does not itself grant a visa, calculate migration points, guarantee an invitation or prove that a state will nominate the applicant. Conversely, a person may have strong visa prospects but still need an acceptable skills assessment in the nominated occupation before progressing through a points-tested pathway. Home Affairs states that an applicant generally needs the relevant skills assessment before submitting an Expression of Interest in SkillSelect.
The correct assessment pathway depends primarily on the qualification: where it was obtained, whether the specific program was fully accredited, when the applicant commenced or graduated, and whether the requested occupation corresponds with the qualification. Applicants whose qualifications do not meet an accredited pathway, or who seek a different occupation, may need to demonstrate entry-to-practice competency through a CDR.
The strongest application is not the longest application. It is the application in which the pathway, qualification, occupation, documents and competency evidence all tell the same accurate story.
Important limitation: This article explains public Engineers Australia and Home Affairs information available in July 2026. It is general information, not individual migration or legal advice. Fees, occupations, visa rules and assessment instructions can change, so check the current official pages before lodging.
What Is an Engineers Australia Migration Skills Assessment?
A migration skills assessment is an independent assessment by the relevant Australian assessing authority. For most engineering occupations, Engineers Australia examines whether the applicant’s qualification, knowledge and—in pathways where it is relevant—competency or employment evidence satisfy the standard associated with the nominated outcome.
A successful applicant receives an outcome letter showing the assessed occupational category and, where applicable, the engineering occupation. Under the CDR pathway, Engineers Australia states that the successful letter shows both the occupational category and the selected engineering occupation from the government-determined list available in the application portal.
Engineers Australia currently recognises four categories for migration assessment:
- Professional Engineer
- Engineering Technologist
- Engineering Associate
- Engineering Manager
The assessment is primarily an entry-to-practice, or Stage 1, question: does the evidence demonstrate the knowledge base, engineering application ability and professional attributes expected in the nominated category? It should not be confused with Chartered assessment, which evaluates independent professional practice, or with statutory state registration.
What it does not decide
Engineers Australia expressly states that it cannot provide migration advice and does not award migration points. Home Affairs determines visa eligibility and points. State and territory governments manage their own nomination criteria. A positive outcome also does not guarantee employment, professional registration in every jurisdiction or a particular salary.
The outcome letter is valid indefinitely in Engineers Australia’s own system, but the applicant must check Home Affairs requirements for the period during which the assessment can be used for a particular visa application. This difference between organisational validity and migration use is important when planning timing.
The Six-Step Engineers Australia Assessment Process
Engineers Australia presents the process in six stages. Treating each stage as a decision gate reduces the risk of paying for the wrong pathway.
Many unsuccessful or delayed applications can be traced to a mistake at Step 1 or Step 3. An applicant assumes that a university, country or degree title is enough to prove Accord recognition, or chooses a CDR occupation based on migration demand rather than the actual qualification and engineering evidence.
The Four Engineering Occupational Categories
Professional Engineer
Professional Engineers address complex engineering problems and systems. Their evidence normally needs to demonstrate a comprehensive engineering knowledge base, systematic design and analysis, integration of technical and non-technical considerations, professional judgement and responsibility for complex outcomes.
Engineering Technologist
Engineering Technologists generally apply and advance engineering technology within a defined technology domain. The assessment standard is distinct from Professional Engineer; it is not merely a lower score on the same document. The qualification and career episodes should align with the technologist competency framework.
Engineering Associate
Engineering Associates operate with established engineering methods, codes, practices and procedures and often provide technical support in design, construction, operation, maintenance, drafting, inspection and testing. Applicants should use the Engineering Associate summary-statement template rather than the Professional Engineer template.
Engineering Manager
Engineering Manager is a migration category associated with strategic management of engineering operations. It is not simply the title given to a senior engineer who supervises several people. Engineers Australia requires CDR and relevant skilled employment evidence for this category. The application must show genuine organisational-level engineering management, policies, strategies, plans, resources and direction.
Category versus occupation: “Professional Engineer” is an occupational category. “Civil Engineer”, “Mechanical Engineer” or “Electrical Engineer” is an occupation. The successful CDR outcome can identify both. Selecting the correct combination is central to the application.
Which Assessment Pathway Should You Choose?
Australian accredited qualification pathway
Use this pathway when
Australian qualificationFully accreditedYour Australian program is accredited by Engineers Australia and you commenced during or after the applicable accreditation commencement period. From 1 September 2024, only appropriately accredited Australian advanced-diploma or associate-degree programs are eligible for that accredited route.
The outcome under an accredited pathway generally reflects the title or major of the accredited qualification. A person with an accredited civil engineering degree who wants a different engineering occupation should not assume the accredited pathway will provide that different outcome.
Washington Accord pathway
This route is generally relevant to accredited Professional Engineer-level programs from full Washington Accord signatories. The program must appear as fully accredited for the applicable intake, commencement or graduate period, and the qualification must have been completed in or after the year the jurisdiction became a full signatory under the relevant rules.
Sydney Accord pathway
The Sydney Accord relates to accredited engineering-technology education. Again, the country name or institution reputation is not enough. The exact program and applicable dates must satisfy the Accord recognition conditions.
Dublin Accord pathway
The Dublin Accord relates to engineering-technician or associate-level qualifications. Engineers Australia’s current information stresses that provisional accreditation is insufficient for the accredited pathway.
Competency Demonstration Report pathway
The CDR pathway is used when accreditation does not establish the required Stage 1 competency outcome or when the requested occupation differs from the accredited qualification title. It requires the applicant to demonstrate competency through detailed, original engineering evidence.
Engineers Australia’s January 2026 guide also identifies some specific qualifications accepted under the Washington route, including certain French CTI-covered engineering degrees and specified Spanish qualifications with the required professional registration. Applicants in these situations should follow the exact current wording rather than relying on a general blog summary.
How to Check Qualification Accreditation Correctly
Accreditation applies to a program, not to an individual, university or country in general. A university may offer several engineering programs, some accredited and others not. A program may be accredited only for graduates from certain years. A country may become a full Accord signatory after an applicant graduated.
Engineers Australia states that Accord recognition requires:
- The qualification to be completed in or after the year the country became a full signatory under the relevant Accord.
- The specific program to fall within the accredited period shown by the signatory.
- The program to be fully accredited; provisional status is not sufficient.
Start with the International Engineering Alliance qualification checker or the relevant signatory’s official accredited-program register. Save evidence of the search and confirm how the register defines dates. “Intake year”, “commencement year” and “graduation year” are not interchangeable.
Common accreditation errors
- Searching only the institution name and not the program.
- Assuming a master’s degree corrects an unaccredited bachelor’s degree without checking the pathway rules.
- Using provisional accreditation as if it were full accreditation.
- Ignoring the year the country became a full Accord signatory.
- Assuming that a program recognised for domestic professional purposes is automatically recognised under an international Accord.
- Selecting the occupation desired for migration instead of the occupation supported by the accredited title or CDR evidence.
When Is a Competency Demonstration Report Required?
Engineers Australia says applicants should generally use the CDR pathway when they:
- Hold a provisionally accredited Australian qualification.
- Hold an engineering qualification that is not accredited.
- Want assessment in an engineering occupation different from the accredited qualification title.
- Have a qualification, or combination of qualifications, demonstrating underpinning knowledge aligned with the nominated occupation.
- Apply as an Engineering Manager with relevant skilled employment evidence.
A CDR is not a substitute for an unrelated education. Engineers Australia still assesses whether the qualification or combination of qualifications provides suitable underpinning engineering knowledge for the nominated occupation. Work experience can demonstrate application and competence, but it does not automatically transform a non-engineering qualification into any engineering occupation the applicant chooses.
CDR applicants select an engineering occupation in the online application. Engineers Australia states that the list currently contains 31 occupations determined by the Australian Government. The occupation should be selected by comparing academic foundation, career evidence and the actual nature of the applicant’s engineering activity.
A practical occupation test
Ask whether the three strongest career episodes naturally demonstrate the knowledge and work of the nominated occupation. If the applicant must repeatedly reinterpret unrelated projects or rely on job titles rather than engineering activity, the nomination may be weak.
What Documents Are Required?
The exact list depends on the pathway and optional services selected. The current online form and January 2026 preparation guide are authoritative. A typical application may require the following groups.
Identity evidence
- Primary photographic identity document, commonly the passport identity page.
- Change-of-name evidence where names differ across documents.
- Current personal and contact details entered consistently in the portal.
Qualification evidence
- Degree certificate or testamur.
- Complete academic transcript showing subjects and results.
- Evidence relevant to accreditation or program recognition where requested.
- Additional bachelor, postgraduate or related qualifications supporting the application.
- Official English translations for documents not issued in English.
English-language evidence
- Accepted test score report and verification details, unless an exemption applies.
- Passport or Australian study documents supporting an exemption.
- Valid, verifiable results at the time of assessment.
Professional and competency evidence
- Current curriculum vitae or resume covering education and engineering history.
- Three career episodes for the CDR pathway.
- The correct summary statement for the nominated category.
- Engineering evidence such as calculations, diagrams, data or designs where appropriate.
- Employment references when a career episode or employment claim requires verification.
Optional-service evidence
- Employment documents for relevant skilled employment assessment.
- Overseas PhD documents for the PhD-equivalence service.
- Agent appointment documentation where an authorised representative is used.
Upload high-quality colour scans. Ensure names, dates, course titles, employer details and translations are legible. A file called “transcript” should contain the entire transcript, not selected pages. Combine documents logically without creating a single uncontrolled file hundreds of pages long.
Translation caution: Do not replace the original document with an English translation. Upload the original and the required translation in the format specified by Engineers Australia. Names and dates must remain consistent across both versions.
English-Language Requirements in 2026
Engineers Australia requires applicants to demonstrate English-language competency unless an exemption applies. It accepts only results from secure test centres and requires the result to remain valid and verifiable during assessment. The January 2026 guide states that tests must have been taken within three years before lodging.

For tests taken on or before 6 August 2025, the January 2026 guide publishes the previous requirements: IELTS 6 in each component; TOEFL iBT 12 listening, 13 reading, 21 writing and 18 speaking; PTE Academic 50 in each component; and Cambridge 169 in each component.
Engineers Australia accepts IELTS General and Academic, including One Skill Retake results. The guide also accepts Michigan Single Section Retake. Combined results may be accepted case by case when all tests are the same type and the results remain valid and verifiable.
English-test exemptions
Applicants usually do not need a test if they have successfully graduated from an Australian institution after two academic years of study comprising at least 92 weeks in a CRICOS-registered program at AQF level 6 or above. An exemption also usually applies to a citizen holding a valid passport from the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, New Zealand or Republic of Ireland.
Exemptions require valid documentary evidence, and Engineers Australia reserves the right to request further English evidence. Do not assume that studying in English in another country creates an exemption unless the current guide says so.
What Does a CDR Contain?
A CDR is the combined competency submission used to demonstrate that the applicant meets the entry-to-practice elements for the nominated occupational category. The core written components are:
- Three career episodes.
- A summary statement using the correct category template.
- A resume and supporting qualification, identity and English evidence.
The career episodes provide the detailed evidence. The summary statement maps that evidence to every required competency element. The two components must work together. A beautifully written career story that does not cover the elements is incomplete; a summary statement that refers to paragraphs containing no real evidence is equally weak.
Continuing professional development
Older online CDR advice often treats a CPD list as a universal standalone component. Applicants should follow the current portal and current preparation guide rather than copying an outdated package structure. CPD can still support professional currency and may be requested in related competency contexts, but the exact migration application requirements must be checked at the time of lodging.
Engineering evidence
Engineers Australia’s current career-episode guide encourages sufficient engineering evidence, including diagrams, calculations, designs and data. Evidence should be selected, explained and connected to the applicant’s decisions. Attaching a complete thesis or hundreds of drawings without identifying the relevant work does not improve the assessment.
How to Write Strong Career Episodes
Engineers Australia’s June 2025 writing guide states that applicants need three career episodes written in English, in essay form and in the first person. Each episode should be based on a project or piece of work and should normally be between 1,000 and 2,500 words, with the emphasis on the engineering activity personally undertaken.
Choose three useful episodes
The best set shows breadth without becoming repetitive. One episode might demonstrate analysis and design, another investigation and problem-solving, and a third delivery, testing, optimisation or coordination. The episodes do not need to be the largest projects in the applicant’s career. They need to provide the clearest evidence.
Recent graduates may use major academic projects. Engineers Australia requires them to identify their personal contribution within group work and provide the subject and supervisor details. Academic projects should still contain engineering decisions, methods, analysis and results—not a copied thesis abstract.
Career episode details
At the beginning of each episode, identify:
- The project or engineering activity title.
- Start and completion dates.
- Geographical location.
- Employer or organisation.
- Your role and responsibilities.
Project outline
Briefly describe the project objectives, context and your role. This section should orient the assessor. It should not consume half the episode with company history, client marketing language or a general explanation of the industry.
Project details and personal engineering activity
The centre of the episode should explain the engineering problems you investigated, what methods you selected, why you selected them, how you analysed information, how you interpreted results and how the conclusions informed the solution.
Use first-person verbs:
- I calculated…
- I compared…
- I selected… because…
- I identified the risk that…
- I revised the model by…
- I verified the result using…
- I recommended…
“We designed the structure” does not establish your competence. “I developed the lateral model, checked the diaphragm assumptions and compared the base reactions with an independent calculation” does.
Explain engineering judgement
A CDR is not software documentation. Explain the engineering basis for decisions. State why a particular standard, formula, material, test, model or design option was appropriate; what alternatives were considered; and how safety, cost, environment, constructability or uncertainty affected the decision.
Project summary
End with your contribution to the outcome and what you learnt. Avoid claiming the success of an entire organisation. Connect the conclusion to the engineering activity demonstrated in the episode.
Number every paragraph
Engineers Australia instructs applicants to number each paragraph so it can be cross-referenced in the summary statement. Use a clear system such as 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 for Career Episode 1; 2.1 and 2.2 for Career Episode 2; and 3.1 and 3.2 for Career Episode 3.
Weak and stronger CDR wording
Weak: We used finite-element software to analyse the structure and obtained acceptable results.
Stronger: I idealised the transfer level using shell and frame elements, compared alternative support-stiffness assumptions and checked the reactions against a simplified load-take-down. The first model produced unrealistic local peaks, so I refined the mesh only in the discontinuity region and compared averaged design actions before selecting reinforcement.
How to Complete the Summary Statement
The summary statement is an overview of how the three episodes demonstrate the competency elements for the nominated category. Engineers Australia publishes separate templates for Professional Engineer, Engineering Technologist and Engineering Associate, with the applicable competency codes.
For every element, provide:
- A brief explanation of how the competency was applied.
- The exact numbered paragraph or paragraphs where the evidence appears.
The summary statement is not a fourth career episode. Keep the explanations concise. The assessor should be able to follow the paragraph reference and find detailed evidence.
Three mapping mistakes
- Referencing a paragraph that only names the competency: The paragraph must demonstrate the action.
- Using one vague paragraph for many elements: One paragraph can support several related competencies, but only when it contains genuine evidence for each.
- Leaving an element uncovered: The three episodes collectively need to demonstrate all required entry-to-practice elements.
Complete the summary statement after drafting and revising the episodes. The mapping process often reveals that an episode contains too much project description and not enough personal engineering evidence.
Engineering Manager Applications
Engineering Manager is frequently misunderstood. Managing an engineering project, supervising junior engineers or holding the title “Engineering Manager” may not be sufficient. The category concerns management of engineering functions at an organisational level.
Engineers Australia requires Engineering Manager applicants to use the CDR pathway and provide relevant skilled employment evidence. The career episodes and employment material should demonstrate activities such as:
- Formulating engineering strategies, policies and plans.
- Directing engineering operations across a business or major organisational function.
- Allocating technical, financial and human resources.
- Establishing governance, quality, safety and technical-control systems.
- Monitoring organisational engineering performance.
- Leading multiple engineering teams, programs or operational units.
Project-level coordination can be senior and valuable while still aligning more naturally with a Professional Engineer occupation. Applicants should select the category supported by evidence, not the title they believe will create a better migration outcome.
Relevant Skilled Employment Assessment
Relevant skilled employment is an optional paid assessment for most engineering categories and a mandatory component for Engineering Manager. Engineers Australia reviews documentary evidence to determine which employment periods are relevant to the nominated occupation and the applicable skilled date.
The service is different from the basic qualification or CDR assessment. Paying the standard CDR fee does not automatically mean every year in the resume will be assessed for skilled employment.
Employment evidence should prove four things
- The employer or business existed and engaged you.
- The period, hours and employment arrangement are clear.
- The duties were engineering work relevant to the nominated occupation.
- Payment or genuine self-employment can be verified.
Depending on the employment arrangement and current portal instructions, evidence may include employer references, contracts, payslips, tax or social-insurance records and business documentation. References should be signed, dated, on appropriate letterhead and specific about duties. A generic certificate stating only “worked as an engineer” is weak.
Ensure dates in references, resume, portal fields and visa history agree. Explain legitimate overlaps such as part-time teaching alongside full-time engineering. Do not round six months into a year or omit unpaid gaps.

Engineers Australia publishes fees excluding and including GST. The figures below are from its 2026–27 fee schedule. The portal invoice and current official page should be checked immediately before payment.

The assessment cost is only one part of the budget. Applicants may also pay for English testing, translations, certified documents, migration advice or replacement records. A private service’s fee is not an Engineers Australia fee. Ask for a written scope before paying a consultant.
Processing Times and Fast Track
Engineers Australia states that standard migration skills assessment applications generally take 15 weeks to be assigned to an assessor. This is not a promise of a final outcome within 15 weeks. The total period depends on application quality, assessment complexity and whether further information is needed.
The fast-track service aims to have the application assigned to an assessor within 20 business days. It does not guarantee an outcome within that period. The fast-track fee is additional and non-refundable.
When fast track may help
- A genuine visa or nomination deadline is approaching.
- The application is complete and assessment ready.
- English results and documents will remain valid for verification.
- The pathway and occupation have already been checked carefully.
When fast track may waste money
- The CDR still contains missing competency evidence.
- The applicant has chosen an uncertain occupation without resolving alignment.
- Translations or employment records are incomplete.
- The applicant assumes fast track will cure a weak or unethical submission.
Assignment speed and assessment quality are separate matters. Paying for priority cannot replace clear evidence.
Online Submission and Requests for Further Information
Applicants create an Engineers Australia portal account, receive an account ID, select migration skills assessment, choose the pathway and upload the required documents. The application can generally be saved and completed later before submission.
Before pressing submit
- Confirm the pathway and occupational category.
- Confirm the exact occupation selected in the portal.
- Open every uploaded file and check readability.
- Verify that dates and names match across documents.
- Check that the English score is current and verifiable.
- Confirm every summary-statement reference points to the correct paragraph.
- Read the ethical declarations carefully.
Engineers Australia’s January 2026 guide says the application should be assessment ready. If gaps are identified, the applicant has one opportunity, lasting 30 days, to address them. This makes it risky to submit a draft package with the intention of completing it after an assessor asks.
Respond directly to any request. Provide the requested information in an organised way and explain what each new file addresses. Do not replace an entire CDR without identifying changes unless instructed.
The Most Common Engineers Australia Assessment Mistakes
1. Choosing the wrong pathway
Applicants pay for CDR when their exact program is accredited, or choose an Accord route when the program, date or signatory status does not satisfy the rules. Check first.
2. Choosing an occupation based on demand
A high-demand occupation is not automatically the correct assessed occupation. The qualification and engineering evidence must align.
3. Confusing category, occupation and job title
“Professional Engineer”, “Civil Engineer” and “Project Engineer” describe different concepts. The CDR should demonstrate the nominated category and occupation, not merely reproduce an employer’s title.
4. Writing career episodes about the company
Long descriptions of clients, project history and team performance leave insufficient evidence of the applicant’s engineering work.
5. Using “we” instead of “I”
Team context is necessary, but the assessor must identify the applicant’s analysis, decisions and contribution.
6. Describing software operations without engineering reasoning
Clicking commands is not competency. Explain inputs, assumptions, interpretation, verification and decisions.
7. Repeating the same episode three times
Three similar design stories may leave professional, investigative or communication competencies weak. Select a complementary set.
8. Mapping competencies without evidence
The summary statement cannot create evidence that is absent from the referenced paragraph.
9. Using the wrong template
Professional Engineer, Engineering Technologist and Engineering Associate have different templates and competency codes.
10. Submitting weak employment letters
Employment evidence should contain dates, role, duties and verifiable organisational details. A title-only letter does not establish relevant engineering work.
11. Inconsistent dates
Conflicting dates across the resume, references and portal create credibility and assessment problems.
12. Missing original-language documents
A translation normally accompanies the original; it does not replace it.
13. Using an expired or unverifiable English result
The result must satisfy the relevant score table, be within the required period and remain verifiable during assessment.
14. Assuming fast track means fast approval
Fast track changes assignment priority, not evidence standards or the guaranteed outcome date.
15. Submitting before the package is ready
The current guide provides one 30-day opportunity to address identified gaps. It should not be treated as an unlimited editing process.
Plagiarism, AI, Consultants and Ethical Standards
Engineers Australia’s January 2026 guide is explicit: plagiarism, fake documents and misleading information are forbidden. Plagiarism includes presenting another person’s work as your own, copying wording and having career episodes or the summary statement written by a third party.

Using AI
AI-assisted authorship creates the same ethical risk when it replaces the applicant’s work or invents evidence. A tool can help with spelling or clarity only if the final submission remains the applicant’s original, accurate account and complies with Engineers Australia’s rules. Do not upload confidential client material to a public AI service.
A practical test is whether the applicant can explain every sentence, calculation, decision and result in detail without reading the document. If not, the CDR does not reliably represent that person’s competence.
Consultant warning: A person giving Australian immigration assistance may need to be a registered migration agent, legal practitioner or exempt person. Check the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority register before paying for migration advice. CDR editing and migration advice are not automatically the same service.
Assessment Outcome, Review and Appeal
Engineers Australia notifies applicants by email when the assessment is complete. A successful applicant receives a migration skills assessment outcome letter through the portal. Check that the category, occupation and any assessed employment information are correct before using the letter.
Review
A review asks Engineers Australia to reconsider the original decision. The current review page states that the request must generally be lodged within three months of the outcome letter and should identify valid grounds, such as relevant submitted material not being considered, irrelevant information being used, due process not being followed or bias affecting the applicant.
A different internal assessor reviews the original material. New evidence is generally considered only when requested or permitted in exceptional circumstances. The process may take up to seven weeks. If the decision is overturned, the review fee is refunded and a revised outcome is issued.
Appeal
An appeal is available only after a review outcome. It must generally be lodged within six months of the original assessment outcome. An independent appeal manager forms a panel to consider the original and review decisions. The published timeframe is up to 12 weeks. If successful, review and appeal fees are refunded. The appeal decision is final within this process.
Review and appeal should not be treated as opportunities to submit the application that should have been lodged originally. The grounds must address the assessment process or decision based on the applicable rules.
Build a CDR Evidence Matrix Before Writing
One of the most efficient ways to prepare a CDR is to create an evidence matrix before drafting the career episodes. The matrix is a private planning tool, not a substitute for the official summary statement. Its purpose is to test whether the proposed projects collectively contain enough personal engineering evidence to demonstrate the competency elements for the nominated category.
Create one row for each competency element and use columns for the proposed career episode, the specific engineering action, the supporting calculation or deliverable, the likely paragraph reference and any remaining evidence gap. This process forces the applicant to distinguish genuine evidence from general claims. “Worked on sustainable design” is not evidence by itself. “Compared embodied-carbon and structural-performance implications of three material options and recommended the selected system” is a traceable engineering action.

After completing the matrix, select the three episodes that provide the strongest combined coverage. A project may be technically impressive but unsuitable when the applicant performed only a small supporting role. A smaller project may be stronger when it required independent analysis, comparison of alternatives, communication and verification.
The matrix also helps control confidentiality. Identify which diagrams, calculations or data can be included, which details must be anonymised and which evidence should be described rather than reproduced. Do not alter technical facts to disguise a project. Remove identifying commercial information while preserving the engineering logic and your real contribution.
Special Situations: Changed Disciplines, Research, Self-Employment and Missing Records
Applying in a different engineering discipline
Some engineers study one discipline and later work in another. The CDR pathway can allow assessment in an occupation different from the accredited qualification title, but the applicant still needs suitable underpinning knowledge and convincing competency evidence. A recent job title alone may not establish the academic foundation for the nominated occupation. Explain how formal study, further education and progressive engineering work created the required alignment.
Academic and research careers
Researchers should not turn a career episode into a literature review or publication summary. Focus on engineering activity: defining the problem, designing an experiment or model, selecting instrumentation, analysing uncertainty, interpreting results, solving equipment or material problems and translating findings into an engineering recommendation. Publications can support context, but authorship position and citation count do not replace evidence of personal engineering competence.
Self-employment and consulting
Self-employed applicants need evidence showing both genuine business activity and personally performed engineering work. Depending on current instructions and the service requested, useful records may include business registration, contracts, invoices, payment evidence, tax documents, client references and project deliverables. Organise evidence by period and project. Do not rely only on a company profile prepared by the applicant.
Employers that have closed or cannot provide records
Missing records should be explained, not replaced with fabricated documents. Collect legitimate independent evidence that remains available, such as contracts, payslips, tax or social-insurance records, project correspondence and references from authorised former supervisors. Engineers Australia decides whether the evidence is sufficient, so contact it through the official channel when the required document genuinely cannot be obtained.
Overlapping employment, study and part-time work
Present overlapping periods transparently. State whether each role was full time, part time, casual, consulting or academic. Explain how hours were divided where relevant. Consistent records are especially important when relevant skilled employment is requested, because the assessment concerns both the nature and duration of the work.
Best principle for unusual circumstances: provide a clear chronology, disclose the limitation, support each claim with the strongest genuine evidence available and avoid trying to make the history look simpler than it was.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do all overseas engineers need a CDR?
No. Applicants with qualifications that satisfy the Washington, Sydney or Dublin Accord pathway may use the relevant accredited route. CDR is generally required for non-accredited or provisionally accredited qualifications, a different requested occupation, certain combinations of qualifications and Engineering Manager.
Can work experience replace an engineering degree?
Work evidence is important in a CDR, but Engineers Australia normally expects formal engineering education or a combination of qualifications demonstrating underpinning knowledge aligned with the nominated occupation. Experience alone does not guarantee any chosen engineering outcome.
How much is the standard CDR fee?
