How to Write an Australian Engineering Resume That Passes ATS Screening
A strong engineering resume must work twice: first as clean, searchable data for an applicant tracking system, and then as convincing evidence for a recruiter or engineering manager. This guide shows how to build both versions in the same document without keyword stuffing, decorative templates or vague claims.

Engineering applicants frequently assume that qualifications and project experience will speak for themselves. In practice, a resume is not a complete record of a career. It is a short technical argument explaining why one person matches one role. If that argument is hidden inside complex formatting, unfamiliar terminology, long academic descriptions or generic responsibility lists, an applicant tracking system may extract the information poorly and a human reviewer may miss the value even when the candidate is capable.
The challenge is greater in engineering because job advertisements contain layered requirements. The objective is not to rewrite history. It is to prevent a recruiter from misunderstanding a title that has no direct Australian equivalent.
Step 1: Build an Engineering Evidence Bank
Do not begin by formatting a blank resume. Begin by collecting evidence. Engineers often remember responsibilities but forget scale, difficulty and results. An evidence bank is a private master document containing every useful project, achievement, technical skill and credential. It may be ten or twenty pages long because it is not submitted. Mark each requirement as strong evidence, partial evidence or no evidence. Strong evidence belongs high in the resume. Partial evidence should be explained carefully without exaggeration. Include working rights when they remove uncertainty, particularly for migrant engineers. Do not write a long migration history. “Australian Permanent Resident” or “Full Australian working rights” is enough. Step 5: Write a Professional Summary That Positions You Correctly
The summary should normally contain three to five lines and answer four questions: What engineer are you? How experienced are you? What technical or project strengths match this role? What value can you deliver?
Avoid empty statements such as “hard-working professional seeking a challenging position in a reputable organisation”. Every applicant can say this. Use evidence and the employer’s vocabulary.
Structural engineering summary

Uses SolidWorks and engineering calculations to convert operational problems into practical, maintainable solutions.
Do not claim a target identity unsupported by the rest of the resume. A researcher applying for structural design work can position as a “Structural Research and Testing Engineer transitioning into design”, then prove design knowledge, software and project evidence. Calling the person a “Senior Structural Design Engineer” without comparable design responsibility creates a credibility problem.
Step 6: Build a Technical Skills Section That Supports Search and Review
The technical-skills section is useful for keyword visibility, but it should not become a wall of software. Group skills into meaningful categories and prioritise what the role requests.

Avoid making every bullet the same length. Lead with the most relevant achievements. Use present tense for a current role and past tense for previous roles. Write “designed”, “verified”, “coordinated”, “investigated”, “delivered”, “reduced” and “approved” rather than “was responsible for”.
Team achievements are legitimate, but clarify your contribution. “The project achieved completion” does not show what you did. “Led the structural design package through issue for construction, coordinating two graduates and closing design comments” does.
Step 8: Present Project Experience Without Repeating Your Employment History
A selected-projects section is valuable when project type matters more than employer name, when an engineer has worked on many assignments under one consultancy, or when international employers are unfamiliar to Australian recruiters. It is also useful for academics and test engineers whose practical project work may be hidden beneath research titles.
Select three to six projects that match the target role. Each project can contain:

Overseas qualifications do not need to be hidden. Add an Australian equivalency or Engineers Australia skills-assessment result only when formally obtained and relevant. Do not write “Australian equivalent” based on personal assumption.
